“Why don’t buckets/containers have ‘food grade’ printed on them?”
US manufacturers are not required to use the international symbol for food grade
plastic. We instead use a series of arrows around a number to indicate the type of plastic.
The numbers that indicate food-grade plastic are typically 1, 2, 4, or 5:
1: Polyethylene terephthalate (PET or PETE)
2: High-density polyethylene (HDPE)
4: Low-density polyethylene (LDPE)
5: Polypropylene (PP)
